Esign at the UK high court (England & Wales). A development in esign legal history occurred at the UK (England & Wales) high court. You can read the judgement here, the relevant paragraphs are 39-46. While this relates to Consumer Credit regulations in particular, we’d like to draw attention to para 45 and the importance of the need for the signature to be in “the space in the document indicated for the purpose”, which should to be borne in mind while preparing your document. You can fully customise your document on Legalesign with checkboxes and text inputs for signers to complete.

You can now insert drawn signatures with a transparent background to fit seamlessly into your document. You can still choose to have a white background and border if you prefer.  The transparent signatures will soon be the default setting for new groups. Watch this space for more improvements to signing coming soon…

Power users! A small update for you - use ‘*’ (asterisk) to do a ‘starts with’ search on the last name of your signers. For example a search for ‘we*’ will return all documents with signers that have last names commencing ‘we’.

We added a search to Timeline so it’s easy to get a list of all the events that happened on Legalesign on any day.

When you click on timeline you’ll find the date selector on the right hand side. Put in the date and press ‘tab’ and the timeline will list everything that happened that day.

You don’t need to be strict with your date format, you can use slashes or dots, single numbers don’t need a preceeding ‘0’ and if you leave off the year it’ll  get the latest date that fits, (ie. 5/1 is ok, 05.01 will do the same search). Whether the format is dd/mm or mm/dd will depend on your locale.

If you have any suggestions on how you’d like to see timeline improved further let us know!

Some miscellaneous additions to report - you can select to remove the logo on the signing page, to add the document name to the subject line of the signer notification email, and to turn on or off email notifications for the sender.

Get realtime notifications via the API.

The Legalesign API includes a notification system to send you updates when a document is visited, or signed. Currently you can get an update on everything that has happened in the last six minutes, every six minutes.

But for a lot of cases you may just want to know when a document is signed only,  you’re not so concerned when an email was sent, or a document was visited. So we’ve added a second slimmed-down notification option that just lets you know when a document is signed, in realtime.

When a doc is signed, you immediately get a POST with the document identifier and its group identifier - it’s as easy as that.  To integrate with Legalesign in no-time it’s recommended. And as usual notifications don’t cost you anything on your API throttle limits.

Document completion just became better for signers.  Signing methods are now contained within popover boxes just like text inputs. No longer will signing methods have a separate display area. This will perform better for mobile signing, as well as make it simpler and more straightforward for signers with less clicks and a better presentation. It really couldn’t be easier for signers to complete their documents whether at their desktop or on their mobile on the go.

Send a PDF document to signers sequentially or all at the same time - find the setting in ‘more options’ when sending a document.

If you wish to send a PDF to multiple signers try and set up your document so that any text sections for signers have the ‘substantive’ checkbox unticked. If Signer 1 needs to wait for SIgner 4 to complete a text section that is ‘substantive’ (i.e. relevant to the terms of the contract), this will hold up the signing process.

If there is one section of ‘substantive’ text that needs to be assigned to a signer unavoidably, make sure it is signer 1 that needs to complete it and send the document to signers sequentially. Signer 2, 3 and 4 etc won’t hear about the document till the substantive part is completed, and so there won’t be any hold ups.

Text

On a PDF you can define text sections for a signer to complete. This text could either be connected with the terms of the document, or connected with the signing process - e.g. the signer ticking a checkbox to confirm they have read the document, or writing in their name, would be part of the signing process, not substantive to the terms of the document.

The distinction is important.  If you have more than one signer, you don’t want to hold up the signing process while everyone waits for a bit of text from another signer to be completed when that text is not connected with the terms of the document. Now you can define whether text is one type or the other by checking the ‘Substantive/Part of terms’ checkbox for a signer text element. Untick this if other signers don’t need to wait on the text that goes here before they can sign.
